I have come to collage later in life after spending many years writing, and continuing to write, poetry. Both art forms share in common the use of juxtaposition which immediately provides textured complexity and robust energy as the reader / viewer negotiates the differences but also the parallels between two disparate things. I work intuitively and simply with nothing more than scissors, glue, and images I have ripped from magazines and other sources. Instead of choosing a concept or title ahead of time, I let the emerging collision of color, composition, and subject tell me what it wants to say. And what I have often discovered is that my work speaks in a language of women’s empowerment, cultural critique, and wit.
Julie Steward is a Professor of English at Samford University where she teaches creative writing and feminist theory. She has published numerous poems and essays, but her artwork up until now has consisted of little more than stick figures. She recently sold her first collage, and she wants to tell the whole world about it! When she is not teaching or wielding scissors and glue, she performs comedic improv, acts in community theater, and practices Northern Shaolin kung fu.
